Meditation is an avenue for self understanding. The more you understand who you are the better you will feel and the happier you will be. At first, you might feel what you discover is a mess in yourself, but as you go deeper, the more you will forget about yourself find your meaning in the world and the happier you will be.
I agree with Michaelsan and would add that meditation is terrific for clearing the mind of worries, relieving stress, increasing focus and productivity - and much more.
I have recently come to the conclusion that money isn’t the root of all evil; stress is. Stress is resisting “what is”. Think about the last 10 things you’ve done that don’t make you proud (we’re all doing them consistently, to some degree - from overeating, to wasting too much time in front of the TV, to displaying anger, frustration - even engaging in gossip about others). If you think about each of these situations and ask yourself whether stress played a role, you’ll have a “yes” every time.
If you examine those same situations and ask yourself, “Free of stress, would I have done this or would I have done something else?” You’ll find that you would have done something else.
By properly guiding your thoughts while in meditation you can unroot the causes of unwanted behavior bringing yourself out of stress and into courageousness, acceptance and peace. This is happiness - finding within you the love of all things, people and situations.
