Constantly Improving Your Body and Mind

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Even if you look and feel great, there are always steps you can take, every day, to improve your body and mind. It takes constant work to improve your life, even when you have achieved what you believe is your personal best.

So with that said, we all can use some healthy living tips to ensure that we are the best we can be every day.

Healthy Living Tips to Improve Your Body and Mind

It doesn’t matter if you are in perfect shape - or you have created your own unique “shape” over the years - there are always simple strategies that will continue to improve how you look, feel and think. After all, without constantly improving your body and mind, you won’t be able to reach greater heights and experience new things.

The most essential mental and physical health tip is to enjoy quality sleep. Getting enough sleep will boost your health and productivity, and it will rejuvenate your body and mind. Some people may believe that sleep is overrated, but study after study has shown that those who get at least eight hours of sleep look and feel better than those who don’t. It can be tempting to skimp on the number of hours of sleep you get, but it isn’t worth it. Skipping sleep takes a toll on your brain’s ability to function, your appearance, and on your overall long-term health. So do yourself a favor and skip the late night talk shows and midnight snacks tonight!

There’s another easier-said-than-done tip that I’m sure you’ve heard many times before. Any guesses? Exercise, of course! Whether you are trying to lose weight or you’re at your target weight, it can be tempting to skip exercise. No matter how you slice it, it’s not going to do you any good. Not only does exercise help you look good, but it also helps you feel good. Exercise releases endorphins that make you feel good from top to bottom and stress literally drips off you!

It can be difficult to incorporate these healthy living tips into your life, but there is one tool that ties everything together: the power of positive self-talk. You can use positive affirmations to help remind you of your healthy living goals. Affirmations are short statements that encourage you to sharpen your mind and body while conquering your goals and improving on your weaknesses. Affirmations can help you focus on creating and maintaining the healthy body and mind you desire because it gives you the motivation you need to focus on your most important asset - you!

Some examples of affirmations include, “It is okay for me to take care of myself first,” or, “I am healthy and deserve the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.” You can use these simple positive statements throughout the day to stay motivated and focused. After all, we all need some motivation from time to time.

When you implement these strategies in your life, you’ll begin to realize just how easy it can be to lead a healthy lifestyle, especially once you have gained the right set of tools in your self-improvement toolbox!

Building a Life Full of Success

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Do you have friends or family members who have achieved immense success in their lives and you find yourself wishing you could have that the same?  Are you filled with envy toward the people who have everything they want?

Most of us experience these feelings from time to time, but instead of allowing jealousy to make you miserable and negative, you can create your own success.  After all, you are the only person who can control how you define “success.” So instead of spending your time feeling jealous, you can spend your time filling your life with success.

Creating Success for Yourself

Many people spend their lives wondering when success is going to magically appear on their lap but, of course, it never happens this way.  If, instead, we spend less time dreaming and more time building, we’d be much happier and success will be well within our grasp.

Rather than waiting passively for success to whisk you away, it’s time to create your own version of success. When you are proactively taking steps every day, you have a better chance of realizing your goals. After all, it’s far more productive than watching other people achieve success.

A great way to create the successful life you have always hoped for is to set clear, actionable goals. How do you want your life to be defined? What do you want to be doing a year from now, five years from now, or even ten years from now? What sort of goals can you set for yourself that will help motivate you and keep you going in the right direction so you can reach out and grab what you want?

You will want to make sure the goals you set are attainable. The best way to do this is to start with short-term goals that help you work towards your long-term goals. This will help you move forward and build momentum without becoming discouraged. Besides, it’ll help to keep your eye on the prize.  If you set goals that are too ambitious, you will be more inclined to give up before you even get started.

Building a “Success!” Attitude

Your attitude and thoughts determine your success, so make sure they are congruent.  If you have some negative or self-defeating inner dialogues, it will be much more difficult for you to achieve your goals and build the life of success you have always wanted. That’s why it’s a good idea to use the power of positive affirmations to propel you forward.

Affirmations can help people from all walks of life reach great success, even if they started out in the lowest of low places. So remember that success isn’t limited to the rich and famous!

Having a list of affirmations on hand can help you overcome those moments of self-doubt, envy, or even anger that you may feel toward others.  Affirmations are simple thoughts like, “Each simple, completed task propels me towards success,” or, “I am worthy of great success.” These affirmations help to remind you of what your goals are and, in turn, remind you that you are worthy of all you desire, and more!

Breaking the Procrastination Habit with Positive Self-Talk

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Are you a reluctant procrastinator? Do you always wait until the last moment to get things done?  Do you find you are always putting things off until you can’t put them off any longer?  Are your friends, family members, and co-workers frustrated with the way you tackle projects of any size?  If so, you aren’t alone.  Procrastination is something many people deal with. Although it can be hard to change overnight, positive self-talk is a great way to stop procrastinating and change your life. Positive self-talk can help turn you from a procrastinator into a doer.

Using Positive Self-Talk to Stop Procrastinating

Positive self-talk is a great way to stop procrastinating because you can talk yourself out of procrastinating the minute you start!  The problem for most of us who procrastinate is that it is just the way we do things. We don’t even necessarily think about why we procrastinate. It’s our normal approach to life, and it’s hard to stop something we have been doing for so long.  Positive self-talk is a great approach to stopping procrastination as it starts because the self-talk occurs in the moment!

Positive self-talk is the practice of responding to your mind’s thoughts as they happen.  If you know you have a big project you need to start working on today and you think it can wait until tomorrow, for example, you can stop and remind yourself that it needs to be started today. During those moments when you want to wait until tomorrow, you can use positive self-talk to make sure you don’t put off until tomorrow what needs to be done today. Positive self-talk can stop the negative internal dialogue before it gets to the point of being overwhelming.

Many people use affirmations to help with positive self-talk. Affirmations are positive statements you can use to help you steer clear of procrastination. You should repeat these affirmations when you feel the urge to procrastinate.

An example of an affirmation that may help you with procrastination may be: “I feel no need to create obstacles for myself. I move forward, stronger than ever,” or, “By keeping organized and using my time wisely, procrastination melts away.” These are concise statements that can be memorized so no matter where you are when you begin to procrastinate, you can repeat these positive statements to yourself. Doing this helps you to talk yourself out of procrastination mode.

As you can see, positive self-talk is a great way to combat procrastination. You can reprogram the way you think when you use your affirmations. If you stop procrastination in its tracks each and every time, soon the habit of doing things when they need to be done will replace the habit of procrastination.

Once you repeat the process of positive self-talk many times, you’ll be able to combat procrastination, lead a much less hectic life, and the people in your life will thank you for the change in the way you deal with things!  When used effectively, positive self-talk can change your life for the better. So stop procrastinating and start talking to yourself!

Meditation Can Boost Your Confidence

Monday, September 1st, 2008

For most people, meditation is a simple way to get connected spiritually, manage stress and create a more peaceful way of living. But there are also other benefits that come along with a daily meditation practice, one of which is stronger self-confidence.

There are many ways that meditation can help strengthen your confidence, but probably the most important is the way it connects you with a deeper part of yourself. Most of us are used to connecting with our thoughts more than anything else and it’s easy to forget that there is more to us than that.

Regular meditation helps you transcend your thoughts and connect to your true inner essence, whether you want to call it your spirit, your soul, your higher self, or even divinity. The more you connect with this inner core, the more you tend to live your life from a calmer, deeper perspective.

As a result, you are less likely to engage in negative self-talk or be overly critical of yourself. You live each moment with the awareness that you are valuable because of who you are, rather than anything you do. Before you know it, your confidence grows and you find yourself feeling more courageous, willing to take bigger risks and overcome perceived failure. Your very sense of self is no longer tied up in a false perception of who you think you are, but the very core of your being.

Though much of this process happens automatically through regular meditation, there are also a few things you can do if you want to help it along:

Build yourself up with positive self-talk.

Before, during or after your meditation sessions, spend a few minutes speaking positively to and about yourself. It’s best to say things that you won’t have trouble believing because your subconscious mind is more likely to accept them.

Try statements like these:

“I am proud of my past accomplishments. I am capable of becoming great at anything I choose to do. I believe in myself and my capabilities. I give myself permission to be confident and successful. I thrive on challenges. I am unstoppable. I have faith in my dreams.”

Envision empowerment.

Visualization is a perfect complement to meditation and can dramatically improve your results. Spend a few minutes a day imagining yourself feeling completely strong and confident in whatever you do. What would it feel like to be super strong and purposeful every day? Generate some mental pictures of yourself doing just that, and allow yourself to feel that way. The more you imagine yourself feeling and acting confidently, the easier you’ll find it to do in your day to day experiences.

Redefine failure.

One common cause of low self-confidence is pervasive memories of past failures. However, the problem lies not in the failed attempts themselves, but what you concluded from them. You convinced yourself that failure was the end, that you would never be successful – but does that have to be true? What if you began to see “failure” as an opportunity to try again?

Use your meditation sessions to affirm and visualize that you can be successful regardless of how many times you’ve failed in the past. Imagine yourself encouraging others by sharing stories of your past failures – and eventual success! Imagine yourself saying to them, “Do you know how many times I failed before I succeeded? If I can do it, so can you!” If you change your perception of failure into something more positive and empowering, your confidence will skyrocket. You’ll find yourself eager to try again and again until you succeed.

Food Allergies May Cause Forgetfulness

Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Food allergies or sensitivities can trigger brain fog and forgetfulness in a number of ways. A food particle may leak from the digestive system into the bloodstream without being fully digested, and the immune system sees this harmless food particle as a potential invader.

White blood cells, blood vessels, and even distant organs, such as the adrenal glands, respond to the intrusion by releasing a torrent of biochemicals, including histamines, which produce allergic symptoms. An allergic reaction and its brain symptoms can occur within minutes or hours of eating the offending food, as the chemicals build up in the brain and cause inflammation.

Allergies to foods can trigger a variety of other symptoms, such as headache, sinus congestion, runny nose, cramping, diarrhea, and skin eruptions. Lesser known reactions include edema, sore throat, heart palpitations, anxiety, fatigue, mood swings, joint pain, irritable bowel syndrome, and migraine. Many people who have food allergies can eat the food to which they are allergic, but no more than once every three days—this is called a rotation diet.

Most people think of “allergy” as a violent reaction to something: face swelling up, throat swelling shut, breaking out in hives, etc.  There are many lesser symptoms that also have a heavy impact on the overall quality of your life, however.

Personally, after eating wheat I feel sleepy and lethargic - my entire life I’ve felt like napping after a meal.  This changed when I eliminated wheat from my diet - no easy thing because I LOVE wheat (and anything you feel that way about probably isn’t good for you - think of how an alcoholic feels about a beer).  Consumption of sugar tends to cause me to feel highly irritable and later depressed.  I’ve eliminated sugar (as much as possible - Ben and Jerry are evil dudes :-) and honey too.  Agave nectar is now the preferred sweetener, with no side effects I’ve noticed.

Consult a physician, if necessary, but simply pay attention to how you feel and what you feel after you eat certain foods.  You might be surprised at how much your life is affected by what you eat - physically AND mentally.

Don’t Let Stress Zap Your Memory!

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

You return from a much-needed week’s vacation in the tropics where you didn’t take your laptop. You are relaxed, suntanned, and your wife’s hero for making a hat out of palm fronds and ordering dinner in broken Tahitian. There is no way this serene and blissful feeling is going to wear off, even after going back to the grind at the office next week. You vow to rise above it, remember the tranquil waves of paradise, no matter how stressful the situation around you. And you do, until about noon your first day back at work.

The greatest hidden enemy of memory and quality longevity is chronic stress. High anxiety and stress levels often creep up on us without our awareness. Many of us lead tense and hurried lives, where even the mental and physical benefits of occasional rest and recreation disappear quickly and leave us as stressed out as before. Everyone has a different baseline stress level, depending on personality style, coping skills, degree of self-awareness, and other factors.

I regularly listen to the Totally Tranquil program by Holothink.  This program is designed to bring your brainwave activity into an alpha state - alert, yet relaxed, similar to watching television or getting into an engrossing novel.  It’s a great experience - try a free demo of Totally Tranquil.

Great Mental Excercise: Crossword Puzzles

Thursday, August 14th, 2008

Most newspaper crossword fans know that the difficulty level of a particular puzzle is distinctly related to the day of the week - as we get closer to the weekend, the puzzles steadily become more challenging. Crossword puzzles are a good example of mental aerobics, tasks or exercises that involve mental effort.

The goal of these exercises is to “shake up” our usual mental assumptions and force us to think of novel solutions. A successful brainteaser or puzzle often gives us a moment of pleasure and satisfaction when we stumble upon the solution - at that moment a “light bulb” of understanding and insight turns on in our brain. Some experts believe this process correlates with the actual “stretching and toning” workout we are aiming to achieve for our brain cells.

An additional boost can come from listening to classical music (an acquired taste) or the Laser Focus program by Holothink (really helps put my brainwaves in focused state).
